I just spent 3 months working in Map Ta Phut. Stayed at the Rayong City Hotel. Nice Hotel good enough service ,no complaints. About the bars, After a long day,I just want to sit and have a drink, watch some football etc. I started at a place called Goy's, very close to the hotel. Not much happening, loud music, the worse part was the hidden costs on the bill as I paid. Went once paid the bill and never returned.Next, a place recommended by a few Brits,Y33. We all met there pretty regularly. Eventualy 2 things happened, the first was during a major footie match, they switched the comentary to Thai. Would not have been a big problem except there was only one Thai person in the place(who broght his own bottle and was simply buying soda water) and our group, which was running up a large bill. We paid our tab and let the Thai man have his way, the bar's loss. The second thing is soon after the footie problem 2 of our members got short changed. Change for 500baht in place of 1000baht.After some talking to other folks , this is a fairly regular occurance. If you seem drunk ,expect to be short changed is the rule. When I left they refused to show any sport on the telly. The owner said it caused too many arguements. The next stop was a place called Wizards. A good spot. One problem, after a month of going there they installed a slot machine. The girls hover over it,spend all their tips on it and then beg the customers for money to feed it. Very annoying. At the same time they began regular card games in the back. It slowly went from a sports bar into a gambling bar. The staff was more interested in the gambling then serving customers. The last place, around the corner of Wizards is an open air restaraunt. Actualy it's about three or four restaraunts. They have good food, beer, footie and good prices. Never had any problems. This turned out to be a good meeting place for drinks after work and to meet other people working in Map Ta Phut. If you're after ladies just make the trip to Banchang. It's all there.
Cheers.
